Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Livelihood Chronic economic downturn in Pakistan on account of myopic policies, lack of management skills on the part of the planners and half-equipped implementation bodies have pushed more than 40 % population below the poverty line. The World Bank's Task Force on Food Security in its report of 2008-09 put poverty in Pakistan to be at 36.1 percent. The latest assessments add at least 20 million more people to this club of have-nots. The figures now illustrate that poverty has increased more than 40 percent. It is not strange however that the majority of those adversely affected live in rural areas. Here, the poorest households are compelled to spend as much as 78 percent of their income on food and other most essential needs of their lives. Health and education are already compromised. Here, small and landless peasants and workers (both men and women) constitute more than 75% of the total population.More>> |

Gender justice Gender justice is a core value of SAP-Pakistan (SAP-PK) that cuts across the organization’s entire structures and programs in terms of a theme itself. Apart from the fact that gender is mainstreamed in SAP-PK, we also have an independent desk for policy guidance and review of gender aspects in all of our projects, managements and reporting. SAP-PK’s thrust on the give theme is propelled by the philosophy that sustainable development is hard to achieve without equal participation of women and men in political, social and economic life. It is recognition of the fact that patriarchal structures, attitudes and practices prevailing in our society have created imbalance and triggered worst forms of violence towards women because of their vulnerability and unless justice is achieved in approaches, values and models sustainable development remains farce notion. Peace and Human Security The political instability in Pakistan for the past many decades is the parent of all ‘evils’. From liberal and progressive point of view, it is certainly the absence of democracy due to which insecurity, conflict and extremism have spread out their tentacles and made Pakistan a hostage. In a bid to make Pakistani secure, it is irony that we have become insecure. South Asia Partnership Pakistan’s own start dates back to 1987, just one year since the lifting of martial law from Pakistan. On the basis of our experience and research, we find that the one of the fallouts of the military regimes has been that the right wing obscurantist forces have taken control and banished the culture of dialogue from the country. Today’s sectarian violence, the phenomenon of states within state, military actions, suicide bombings, narcotics and smugglers mafia, More>> |

Humanitarian Response
Pakistan is a disaster prone zone where earthquakes, floods and droughts hit every third year or so. Lack of consolidated planning, disaster preparedness and ability to respond on the part of the government are some of the reasons of the mentioned calamites taking toll in terms of human life, property and livestock. Besides this, since recently, military operations have also added to the miseries, at least in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa displacing more than a million people internally, in May 2008. SAP-PK for the past ten years generally and since super floods hit Pakistan in October 2010, particularly, has contributed to alleviate sufferings of the disaster affected people. We have conducted rapid assessments, developed relief and rehabilitation programs and undertook evaluations for improvement and long-term planning, especially for women, who by all standards, are always the worst sufferers.
